Top Five Myths About Training Your Greyhound...

  1. "Greyhounds can't sit."
Greyhounds can sit and most can quite comfortably. However, some do find it uncomfortable and for those, it is best if you concentrate on training other positions.
  2. "My greyhound is too old to start training now."
There is no such thing as "too old" to learn. It does not matter if they are 10 weeks, 10 months, 5 years, or 10 years. It is never too late.
  3. "I just don't have the time."
Hopefully, you got a greyhound because you had a little time each day to devote to a dog and that is all you need. In fact, training sessions are best if no longer than 10 minutes.
  4. "Obedience training methods are too harsh to use on a greyhound."
I agree that some methods are indeed harsh, but there are methods perfectly suited to training a greyhound. In my opinion, clicker training is the easiest, most positive, and non-forceful way of training a dog.
  5. "Racing greyhounds are retired, we should let them relax in retirement."
There is no reason for a healthy, active greyhound to be retired. Their lives can be so much more enjoyable when they have some purpose. You and your greyhound may enjoy training so much that you may want to give show ring obedience or agility a try.
